The Top Fashion Bloggers Making Millions Aren’t Who You Think
Supermodel Linda Evangelista once famously said, of herself and
Christy Turlington, "We don't wake up for less than $10,000 a day."
But even that seems paltry given the ungodly sums being hauled in by
contemporary fashion bloggers.
Today's Women's Wear Daily proclaims,
"Bloggers are joining the million dollar club."
Major names like Bryanboy's Bryan, Grey-Yambao and Song of Style's
Aimee Song can command close to $50,000 for an appearance (Grey-Yambao
made $40,000 at a Siam Center ribbon cutting last year), but the
surprising nugget was that virtual unknowns are making bank, like Salt
Lake City's Rachel Parcell of Pink Peonies.
Through programs like RewardStyle, which helps top style bloggers
monetize their content, Parcell and others are able to link up with
brands to drive retail sales.
"The most important thing we look at is retail sales driven,"
RewardStyle president Amber Venz said.
"While conversion rate can tell us a bit about a publisher, we're a
little less interested in that and more interested in what [sales]
they will drive as a publisher."
Parcell is expected to make at least $960,000 this year.
Utah is certainly far away from fashion capitals like New York, Paris,
London, and Milan, so is Parcell able to capture more of an audience
given her unique location.
She certainly doesn't have to compete in the same way as N.Y.C.-based
bloggers like Man Repeller's Leandra Medine, but clearly, her audience
is more dedicated.
"I'm not up in the millions, yet I convert higher than some of these
girls who have millions of followers," said Parcell.
Point taken.
Still,WWDstates, "None of the top bloggers interviewed for this
article say they adhere to a strict set of journalistic codes or
ethics."
So, despite bloggers driving loads of sales to brands like Tod's and
Rebecca Minkoff, their fans should know they may not be schilling
something because they genuinely like it, but because the brand is
paying top dollar.
