Yakub Ishowo wins 2nd Best Student's Union President in Nigeria 2015 - Iambenavat
The President of the University of Ilorin Students' Union, Comrade Yakubu Ishowo, has been adjudged the second best students' union president in the country, following his sterling performance at the just concluded 2015 Students' Leadership Development Tournament (SLEDT).
At the grand finale of the three-day tournament, co-sponsored by Worldview International and Lead Initiative, held penultimate Friday (May 22, 2015), the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Adebisi Balogun,
announced that the University of Ilorin team, led by Comrade Ishowo, had a total of 315.5 points to pick the second position.
Prof. Balogun, who is also the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology,
Akure, also announced that the Osun State University team scored 318.5 points to pick the first position
while the Federal University of Technology, Owerri; the Federal University of Technology, Minna and them University of Calabar, polled 263.5; 256 and 242 points, to pick the third, fourth and fifth positions
respectively.
Other laurels won by Comrade Ishowo at the leadership tournament include: the Most Visionary Students' Union President in Nigeria, the Most Productive Students' Union President in Nigeria, the Most Peaceful Students' Union President in Nigeria, the Students' Union President with Best Continuity Plan, and the
Most Accountable Students' Union President in Nigeria.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali
(OON), commended the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for its non-violent approach to issues in recent times and for finding a workable method of interacting with University
managements across the country.
Prof. Ambali urged the National Universities Commission (NUC) to emphasise character-moulding in theNigerian university system.
The Vice-Chancellor also noted that at the University of Ilorin, the students' union has been changing thebaton of leadership without rancour for several years and the fact that election is conducted electronicallyhas eliminated the possibility of election malpractice.
In his address, Prof. Balogun recalled that he was wary of students' unrest during his tenure as the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, adding that on assumption of office, he met with the leaders of the Students' Union Government and took them on tours of universities in South Africa and the United Kingdom (UK) to learn from their student/management relationship .
Prof. Balogun pointed out that it is not in the interest of students to attack an institution whose certificate they will eventually hold.
He said that one of the ideals with which the University of Ilorin is known is consistency in its academic calendar and other achievements, as he recalled that the Association of West African Universities was established right at the University of Ilorin Auditorium.
